Dallas
Morning News publisher Jim Moroney III announces 73 layoffs
October
26, 2001
Dear
Fellow Employees,
As you
probably know by now, 73 of our colleagues lost their jobs
yesterday. No company ever wants to be in the position to
have to reduce its workforce. Yet it is the company's responsiblity
to make the best decisions for the long-term well being of
the organization and our remaining 2,420 employees. While
I regret the need to take this action, I am confident this
was the right decision on behalf of The Dallas Morning
News.
All
of us feel some sense of loss. Seventy-three of our colleagues
and, in some cases, our personal friends are out of a job
today. We should all be respectful and supportive of one another
as each of us works through these changes in his or her own
way.
This
reduction in our workforce does not change our daily obligation
to inform the communities we serve with information which
is relevant, balanced and accurate. We will continue to fulfill
this role through the best work each of you can bring to your
job everyday.
We have
not printed the most newspapers The Dallas Morning News
will ever print. Nor have we printed the best newspaper
The Dallas Morning News will ever print. Those days
are ahead of us all. I'm looking forward to each and everyone
of them.
Regards,
Jim
