Computer Illustration
First place: Sacha Waldman, Sports Illustrated

Portrait of Charlotte Hornet Jamal Mashburn, 3/9/01, Charlotte, North Carolina.

  Computer Illustration judging criteria:
When illustrating, the idea is key. We seek to reward outstanding execution, without digital means, for an idea that raises the bar on creativity and execution in this area of the illustrative. (Newspaper and Magazine)

First Place: Sacha Waldman, Freelance
Second Place: Carol Cleere, Tampa Tribune
Third Place: Allison Corbett, Ohio University
Honorable Mention: Chris Landsberger, Enid News & Eagle

Winner's comments:
"It's always great to get recognition for what you do. I only had 15 minutes to photograph Jamal Mashburn. He was just a tower of a man and I was looking at photographing him with a feeling of strength, of steel. I wanted to create something visually with a towering perspective. The computer is an extension, a new tool we can use. I never use any photo elements that haven't been done by me. Sometimes I have two ideas and merge the two. Digital (photography and computer illustrations) create something interesting that's not just another photograph of celebrity."

Sacha Waldman

Overall judges' comments:
The Jamal Mashburn image is a fine example of simplicity at its best. This is not an outrageous computer illustration. It is stylized enough to make a very effective point. The visual effect is well resolved and it is simple and to the point.
