Domestic News Picture Story judging criteria:
A series of news pictures, taken in the United States, that depicts a story line or single theme. This story may be spot news, general news or issue reporting. 12 images maximum per story. (Newspaper)

First Place: A.J. Wolfe, The Commercial Appeal
Second Place: Karen Ducey, freelance/Indianapolis Star
Third Place: Liz O. Baylen, THE WASHINGTON TIMES
Honorable Mention: Cherie Diez, St. Petersburg Times
Honorable Mention: Steve Jessmore, The Flint Journal
Honorable Mention: Steven M. Herppich, Cincinnati Enquirer

Overall judges' comments:
"I kept looking for a Rodney King thing or an O.J. Simpson story. Improving schools is just as important as a news story like a riot....I started to look at it a little harder because I wasn't looking at the caption... I was looking at the pictures only....Because I work for a national news publication, I was looking at it [the winner] as a local story. ...Looking at the proofs made me change my mind. I was studying the pictures harder....I studied them more and I started feeling more about them." ---ROBERT HANASHIRO
