First place: Kurt Vinion, Freelance

As a roadblock burns behind them, protestant children queue to buy ice cream in the Sandy Row district of West Belfast before the start of the July 12 celebrations. Children are indoctrinated at an early age into the political landscape of N. Ireland as they experience first hand the sectarian hatred that still plaques their communities.

Magazine Feature judging criteria: A picture of a "found" situation with strong human interest, or a fresh view of an everyday scene.
  First Place: Kurt Vinion, Freelance
Second Place: Donna DeCesare, Aperture
Third Place: Diana Walker, The New York Times Magazine
Honorable Mention: Donna DeCesare, UNICEF
Honorable Mention: Janet Jarmen, Contact Press Images

Judges' comments:
"This is an incredibly daunting contrast of information and emotion. Fire and ice cream are dominant compositional elements as this images speaks profoundly to the adaptability of the human spirit. While a roadblock burns in the background, these young boys strive to carry on with an innocent act of having fun. They know that." -- Kenny Irby
