Judges' comments:
"This is an honest and revealing moment. It tells a whole story immediately. You have a sense of place and a sense of time, and a sense of news and history. It shows how your environment makes you who you are. That's everything a portrait should be, whether it's a found moment or a portrait that a photographer puts together in the studio. To me, this was the picture that immediately popped out at me, I think because children have been in a lot of different themes we've been looking at over the last week. It's not only a portrait of two people, but it's a portrait of a news situation or news event." -- Robert Hanashiro
