Nature & Environment Story - Newspaper & Magazine
First Place:
Ami Vitale, Panos
Second Place: Michael Robinson-Chavez, The Washington Post

Winner's comments:
Mauritania is a magnificent but rugged place. Despite the difficult conditions and heartbreaking moments, I met countless wonderful people doing amazing things. My sincere appreciation to everyone working at Oxfam who has sacrificed so much to make a difference every day. -- Amy Vitale

Judges' comments:
"Ms. Vitale's illuminating picture story on the plight of West Africa includes stunning photographs with a transporting quality. Her photographs of the musicians and local fishermen singing about their struggles are a wonderful alternative to the obvious images of sun-seared earth, although her images of those unfortunate realities are stunning as well."
-- Kenny Irby
