Scene 3

Scene 2:
Abdication Corner

Setting: Sam is seated in the lobby of Company 2. She has arrived early for her interview, so she has an opportunity to overhear several employee conversations as people wander past the reception area.

JOHN: Hey, Betty, how's it going?

BETTY: The usual. Not much happening. How's by you?

JOHN: Same. Remember that idea I told you about? Well, I finally got up the nerve to ask.

BETTY: And they said, "No" Right? I told you not to waste your time.

JOHN: I know. But it's such a great idea. I know it would work. I just canât believe·

BETTY: John, save yourself the heartache. They don't want new ideas. Haven't they made that pretty clear?

LARRY: Hey, guys. What's up?

BETTY: Same old, same old. John, here, is trying to sell his idea, but THEY aren't biting.

LARRY: I coulda told you that. Youâre still new. Youâll learn. Forget it, turn in your numbers, and donât rock the boat. That's what I do· (Larry, John, and Betty drift away. Susan and Mary pass by.)

SUSAN: No way. I'm not going to do that. They can't make me.

MARY: Well, anyway, it was just a thought.

SUSAN: Forget it! Find someone else. (Susan and Mary continue on.)

ANDY: (Andy walks past with Bill) Oh, man. That was embarrassing. When I figured out who they were talking about there was NO WAY I was going to say where I work.

SARAH: (Sarah and Bill walk up. As Sarah heads over to introduce herself to Sam, she says to Bill). All I know is corporate said we canât and Iâm certainly not going to be the one to ask why. (Turning) You must be Sam. Hi, I'm Sarah and this is Bill.

Fade to black.
