The visual aim here was admirable: Survey the key scenes of Sept. 11 -- the Pentagon, the Pennsylvania crash site, Ground Zero, along with Kansas City -- and synopsize what's going on at each a year later. I wish the page had more of the starkness of last year's. That's tough to do when you have a lot of Sept. 11 text and election news, too. If the lead photo package had a bit more size and briefer cutlines, the page would've had more impact. Stray indents and changes in alignment don't help either. The Star is to be praised for attempting an ambitious display. There are a few too many visual distractions, however. Less is more, especially on big news days. |
