We chose the photograph of the twin beacons of light because we felt that our readers would be innundated with fireballs and dust clouds. The shafts of light spearing the darkness mirrored the tone of our special section, which spoke to both the chaos of the moment and the coming together of the country. Our section took a very Cleveland angle, since this was the freshest perspective that we could offer and something that no other printed source could provide. Planning for the section began about two months ago.

As for the home delivery page one, we wanted to show the general sense one year later, and did not want to step on the more emotional picture potential that will be of the news of the actual ceremonies.

This is a newsy retrospective, dominated by the latest information on the ongoing terrorist threat and a Vincent Laforet panorama of Ground Zero. The aftermath of Sept. 11 doesn't consume the front page; there are two local stories at the bottom. The Plain Dealer made the decision to devote a special section to the retrospective; the cover of that section is as dramatic and magazine-like as they come, with a nice resonance between headline and image. Creating a special section allowed the paper to preserve the front page as a traditional roundup of the day's events, which is done skillfully and with restraint.
