Weeks before the anniversary, we had preconceived our original A1 presentation: A collection of seven vignettes of everyday people, not survivors, who had made significant changes within the past year. But we struggled with the overall predictability of the package. We knew we wanted to set this paper apart from past issues, but we didn't want to produce something contrived or forced. Then, a few hours later when our chief photographer brought back this image, we knew we had not only our dominant art, but the only main element for the page. Something that would speak to our community's sense of grief, remembrance and resolution.

In terms of sheer aesthetic inspiration, here is a winner. At The Cape Cod Times, they started with a gorgeous image, with sunlight streaming around a firefighter with a flag (as a bird soars overhead). They brought the picture up under the nameplate, added understated headline typography and used color as punctuation. This page communicates hope.
