| Our intent on the one-year
anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001 was to create the newspaper equivalent of
a moment of silence. The simple watercolor illustration and white space
on page one give readers a visual opportunity to fill in their own feelings
and recollections. The names of the 2,834 known victims, listed on page
two, honor those who lost their lives.
A year ago, our community joined the rest of the nation in experiencing a profound shock. As a local newspaper, we felt we needed to connect with our readers both emotionally and intellectually. We've done our best to present the news of the day today without trivializing the tragic events of last year or adding to the feelings of grief so many of our readers still feel. |

| Even before the anniversary
of Sept. 11, we were hearing concerns about media excess. But here is
an amazing antidote to that. Instead of visual noise, we have visual silence.
Instead of a dozen seen-before photos, we have a DELICATE WATERColor.
The event has prompted some visual journalsts to reach deep into the toolbag,
and here is a prime example. Wow. |
