The editor's note refered to our 10-page special section, which contained vingnettes from community folks. Those vignettes, in turn, refered to videotape of the interviews on our website.

The main signal that this is a special day in Kalamazoo is the commitment of the front page to Sept. 11 coverage. It's a thorough page, though it may lack the punch of last year's stark front. A paper needs to be able to deliver big news quickly and powerfully, as the Gazette did last year. But on other occasions, more invention is called for. I wish this year's front had a more distinctive visual approach. There are ambitious stories, clearly, and lots of text, but readers could use more white space, a bigger focal point and better use of display type to help them see the main points of stories more quickly. When coverage is 24/7, there is more pressure on visuals and display type to make the small type look worth reading.
