FELLOWSHIP
JOURNAL
Hierarchy and Contrast
Visual
journalism fellows spent last week exploring the fundamentals of
design, working with type, grids and color to create rhythm and
contrast. Over
the next three days, this space will highlight work from each of
three assignments last week.

Typography
helps readers in critical ways. It cues them to the most important
content, provides a path to guide them through the text, and illustrates
the relative significance of different elements.
The
best typography takes advantage of type hierarchy, structure and
contrast. For this exercise,
visual journalism fellows chose a date of historical significance
and were asked to create a type treatment for the headline, date,
and a paragraph of text.
Ed
Bremner described his approach: "Given the serious nature
of the date I chose, the day of the Supreme Court decision in Brown
vs. Board of Education, I tried to give an explanatory but restrained
tone to the piece. The background color choice helped reinforce
the significance of the date."
