FELLOWSHIP JOURNAL
Color Palettes

By Christina Escudero

Visual journalism fellows spent last week exploring the fundamentals of design, working with type, grids and color to create rhythm and contrast. For this exercise, fellows chose a single-word concept for a magazine cover and created a color palette that would express that concept.

The beat palette assignment made us stop and consider the impact that color can have on a page. The right colors can draw people to a publication while the wrong colors can alienate your demographic.

We also learned how to make a solid magazine cover with little or no good art. With some creative improvisation, even the most unexciting material has the potential to become compelling.

My design for the cover of Active Magazine is 'vibrant.' The publication's audience is primarily retirees over the age of 55. These are senior citizens that are interested in staying energetic and lively.

I tried to reflect their goal through my color palette, which had many warm colors.
